1937 - John F. Kennedy in Den Haag

Met zijn beste vriend Kirk LeMoyne Billing maakte John F. Kennedy, samen Jack and Lem genaamd, als 20 jarige een reis door Europa. Zijn vader Joe Kennedy raadde hem aan dit nu te doen, want zei hij: "ze gaan daar straks schieten."

Op maandag 23 augustus 1937 reden beide jongens in een Ford convertible met Frans kenteken Den Haag binnen om daar een dag en een nacht te verblijven. Dit weten we omdat Jack (JFK) een reisverslag bijhield.

Achterin dat verslag hield hij de hotels en pensions bij. Bij 'Hague' staat: 'Salvation Army, 40 cents'. Er werd dus niet met geld gesmeten. Ze overnachtten in hotel-restaurant Elim van het Leger des Heils aan de Wagenstraat 119.

De volgende dag besloten ze even rond te kijken in Den Haag, maar volgens het reisverslag vonden de heren deze stad maar saai. Op de Plaats werd bij het reisbureau van American Express geld opgenomen. Buiten werd de in Duitsland gekochte teckel 'Offie' voor vijf Gulden verkocht aan een Haagse man want Jack bleek allergisch voor die hond.

Hierna vertrokken ze naar Antwerpen.

With his best friend Kirk LeMoyne Billing,  20 year-old John F. Kennedy was traveling through Europe. His father Joe Kennedy advised him to do this now, because he said, "they will be shooting each other over there soon."

On Monday, August 23, 1937 the two boys arrived in The Hague in The Netherlands in a Ford convertible with French registration. They would stay there for a day and a night. We know this because Jack (JFK) kept a travelogue.

The photos of Jack and Lem with dachshund Offie were taken on ‘het Plein’ in The Hague.

In the back of that travelogue JFK writes down each hotel and guesthouse they stayed in. At 'Hague' he wrote: 'Salvation Army, 40 cents. They spent the night at the Salvation Army's hotel Elim on Wagenstraat 119.

The next day they decided to take a look at The Hague, but they found the city boring. They went to ‘Plaats’ in The Hague to withdraw money at the American Express tourist agency. They sold the dog outside the agency to a Dutch man because Jack proved to be allergic to the dog.

Then they went to Antwerp.
